Monday | Groups will take Wild Whatcom Bus to spend day at Little Squalicum Park

Tuesday | Groups will take Wild Whatcom Bus to spend day at Larrabee State Park (Amphitheater)


Sample Itinerary

Activities may vary depending on participant interests and variable safety considerations (i.e. weather, preparedness, support needs)

8:30-8:45: Flexible Drop Off

  • Play game while waiting for participants to arrive

8:45-9:30: Opening Circle

  • Introductions: Share names and pronouns

  • Cover physical and heart safety

  • Share plan for the day

9:30-9:45: Game Break: Where the Wind Blows

9:45-10:00: Snack Break

10:00-10:45: Invertebrate Lesson

  • What is an invertebrate?

    • Invertebrates are living things without backbones/boney skeletons

  • Who is an invertebrate?

  • Explore pictures in guidebooks and printouts

    • What Invertebrates have you seen/do you know about?

  • Where do these invertebrates live?

    • In the dirt and mud, in the ocean, in the air, everywhere!

10:45-11:30: Invertebrate Search and Free Explore

  • Search for worms, insects and slugs

  • Draw/write about the invertebrates we found in your journal

11:30-12:00: Lunch

12:00-12:30: Play Invertebrate Games: Birds and worms, Hungry Caterpillar, or Owl Eyes

12:30-1:15: Free Explore and Insect Home building

  • Build a home for an insect based on the card that shows what each different insect needs (for food and shelter)

1:15-1:45: Storytime - Read “The Slug” by Elise Gravel

1:45-2:15: Peaceful Place

  • Make up an invertebrate and draw it

  • What kind of body shape does it have? What colors? Does it make any sounds? What does it eat?

2:15-2:30: Closing Circle

  • Preview of next day

  • Attitude of gratitude - What are you thankful for from our time together?
